This Level 3 Diploma in Aromatherapy (VTCT Awarding Body) training course is  comprehensive and practical.  This vastly interesting course will provide you with knowledge of the principles of Aromatherapy, and how Aromatherapists practice. You will learn the benefits and techniques of Aromatherapy massage and the sources and effects of essential oils, and be able to provide treatments safely and effectively to clients in different circumstances and be able to apply essential oils in other media such as creams, lotions and water products.

This course provides credits and units that are mapped to National Occupational Standards and the Aromatherapy Core Curriculum.  It is recognised by the main professional bodies including Federation of Holistic Therapists who provide insurance cover, advice and information and continuing educational programmes.

After graduating you will be able to apply for membership to this governing body and others as well as the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) – the UK’s complementary health register.

As an independent training school, we are not dependent on government funding, we understanding the training requirements necessary to become a competent, practicing, professional aromatherapist.  We can be flexible in our training methods and therefore respond accordingly to individual student needs.

All courses are personally taught by myself, Christina Lyne, an experienced Aromatherapist and Trainer in Aromatherapy.   I have worked with essential oils, aromatherapy massage and aromatherapy product making, with clients and training students, for over 15 years and I also present a podcasts called Essential Wellbeing where I focus on essential oils.  By studying with me you will have access to a vast knowledge of aromatherapy and also running a therapy business.  You will have my full support during the course and also after completion of the course.



Course Description

As you progress through the course you will be continually assessed in the practical and theoretical aspects. You should set aside approximately 12 hours per week to work on home assignments which will include detailed case study work. We provide a recommended reading list at the beginning of the course and you will have exclusive access to our secure student area on this website.  

This course is made up of 4 units:

  1. Provide Aromatherapy Unit
  2. Principles and Practice of Complementary Therapies
  3. Knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology for Complementary Therapies – this unit is taught online with an online assessment at the end
  4. Business Practice for Complementary Therapies

Course Content

The course comprises of the following units:


  • Provide Aromatherapy for Complementary Therapies

The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the theory of essential oils and fixed oils, the knowledge and skills to carry out Aromatherapy treatments and to operate as a professional practitioner.  The skills developed by the learner include: communication skills, organisation skills, the ability to work unsupervised, how to adapt techniques according to the situation, the ability to plan and promote services and advise on aftercare. The knowledge acquired by the learner will enable them to understand how the related body systems work, the effect aromatherapy treatments can have on each of these systems and the theory behind each technique performed.

This unit is taught over 12 attended days for 6 months.

The learner will study 40 essential oils and 20 fixed oils within this course.

Essential Oils; Lavender, Lavandin, Lavender Spike, Clary Sage, Marjoram, Rosemary, Thyme, Peppermint, Basil, Patchouli, Neroli, Petitgrain, Orange Bitter and Sweet, Bergamot, Lemon, Mandarin, Grapefruit, Melissa, Roman and German Chamomile, Eucalyptus (4 types), Tea Tree, Geranium, Black Pepper, Fennel, Rose damask and cabbage, Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood, Frankincense, Myrrh, Ginger, Lemongrass, Vetivert, Cedarwood, Cypress and Juniper.

Fixed Oils; Sweet Almond, Apricot Kernel, Peach Kernel, Soya, Peanut, Sunflower, Grapeseed, Olive, Avocado, Sesame, Linseed, Hazel, Walnut, Macadamia, Coconut, Evening Primrose, Castor, Rapeseed and Jojoba.

Aromatherapy Product Making

The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with; the theory and knowledge of creating a synergistic blend of essential oils and then blend into base products; cream, lotion, gel wash, shampoo, conditioner, solid and water based products and the skills to carry out a consultation and create an aromatherapy product specific to the client’s needs.  

We will also make a shampoo and lip balm using raw materials.


It is recommended that learners have completed or made arrangements to attend a first aid course.


  • Principles and Practice of Complementary Therapies

The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to enable them to practice complementary therapies.  The knowledge acquired by the learner will enable them to understand the key historical factors and theoretical background for complementary therapies, the main influences on working within the complementary therapy industry and an understanding of the key aspects of good clinical practice.


  • Knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology for Complementary Therapies

This unit includes:

Understanding the Organisation of the body, The Skin, Hair & Nails, The Skeletal System, The Muscular System, The Nervous System, The Endocrine System, The Respiratory System, The Cardiovascular System, The Lymphatic System, The Digestive System, The Urinary System and The Reproductive System.

This unit is taught online.  You will receive a module workbook, manual and recorded teaching webinar for each body system.

There is an online assessment at end of this unit consisting of two papers which are completed in exam conditions at Aromalyne Training.


  • Business Practice for Complementary Therapies

The aim of this unit is to introduce the learner to the principles of business in complementary therapies.  The learner will gain an understanding of the key business criteria required for complementary therapies, will be able to research a business concept and be able to prepare a business plan.


Teaching Methods

The educational aims are to develop the in-depth knowledge and skill required to provide safe and effective treatments.

The following methods are used:

  • Lectures and visual aids in the classroom and online.
  • Detailed demonstrations and practice of techniques.
  • Detailed handouts and workbooks for each student.
  • Supervised practice and individual practical experience.
  • Open discussion periods with course tutor and access to a facebook group to post questions.
  • Online Teaching Calls
  • Monitored home assignments.
  • Continuous assessment by course tutor of the development of personal qualities required of a professional practitioner.
  • All course material will be available to the student through the website student area.
Class Size

Class size is a maximum of 4 students. This allows us to monitor individual progress and development. We provide ongoing support in and out of the classroom.

Evidence of Achievement

You will be required to show achievement of a range of relevant learning outcomes and assessment.

  • Three practical client assessments
  • Presentation of 60 case study treatments
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Anatomy & Physiology Online Assessment

You will prepare, under the guidance of the course tutor, a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate that you have covered the syllabus and achieved all the required learning outcomes.

Qualification Attained

Level 3 Diploma in Aromatherapy 

This course also qualifies for RPL (Recognised Prior Learning) if you are already qualified in Reflexology and Body Massage.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants must be 19 years or over.  No other formal qualifications are necessary.


The attended sessions for this course takes place at Aromalyne Training Studio, 60 Ancton Way, Elmer Sands, Bognor Regis, West Sussex, PO22 6JP, UK.

The day normally runs from 9.30am-4.30pm.


Course Fees

The full fee for the Level 3 Diploma in Aromatherapy is £1,897.

To secure your place, £300 is required by way of a non – refundable deposit.


Option 1. Payment in Full
Payment in full will be made fourteen days before the first day of the course and will attract a £50 discount, making one final payment of £1,847.

Option 2. Spread Payment

To secure your place. £300 is required by way of a non-refundable deposit.

£597 to be paid fourteen days before the first day of the course, plus 4 monthly payments of £250 to be paid on the first day of the month thereafter.

Students may pay either by post-dated cheque, cash or internet bank transfer.


There will be an additional registration fee to the VTCT Awarding Body (currently £99).


Students will be required to organise student membership to a governing body, eg. Federation of Holistic Therapists, and student insurance (for up to 12 months).
