Allergies – Vitamin C is a natural Antihistamine!

If you have an allergy you may find some relief by using natural plant extracts and certain types of food that act as antihistamines.

Antihistamines are substances that block histamine activity in the body. Histamine is a protein that triggers allergy symptoms, such as sneezing, itchy eyes, and a scratchy throat. You can use prescription medications which will be relatively effective but there will be side effects like drowsiness and nausea. So if you can try to help naturally that would be a fantastic option!

Vitamin C is great to add to your diet because it boosts the immune system and it also acts as a natural antihistamine. As Vitamin C is a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory it may act as a treatment for allergies.

Vitamin C is present in many fruits and vegetables including: peppers, broccoli, cantaloupe melon, cauliflower, citrus fruits, kiwifruit, strawberries, tomatoes and tomato juice and winter squash – winter squash has thick skin usually considered to be inedible but pumpkins and butternut squash taste amazing so add to soups or salads (they are called winter squash because these plants have a long shelf life and can survive for weeks or months if stored in a cool, dry place).

Aim to add a selection of these fruit and vegetables each day to increase your Vitamin C in your diet!
